"QUOTES FROM FRIENDS"

“Professor Beaven pioneered many of the developments in diabetes care in New Zealand. He realised the burden that diabetes has on society, and will increasingly have, decades before others in professional and government organisations.” (Dr Alexander Graham Dawson)

“His particular interest of diabetes is now a priority in the New Zealand Health Strategy, however Prof Beaven’s involvement in this challenge spans many decades, and started long before others recognized the future impact that this condition would have on all New Zealanders. One of his true interests…[has been] empowering people to manage their own diabetes. He has devoted substantial voluntary commitment to Diabetes Societies and local groups.

His national, and indeed international, influence has extended beyond diabetes and improving treatments for individuals to the public health approaches motivating improvements in nutrition and physical activity. These have influenced and contributed to present strategies for healthy eating and healthy action, which my Ministry has contributed to developing with the wider sector.” (Dr Karen O Poutasi, Director-General of Health, Ministry of Health)

“In establishing the Christchurch Diabetes Centre he forged a partnership between health professionals (doctors, nurses, dietitians) and patients represented by the Christchurch Diabetes Society (now Diabetes Christchurch, a branch of Diabetes New Zealand). He has been the ‘founding father’ of the specialty of diabetes in New Zealand and has generated enthusiasm in subsequent generations of diabetes specialists.” (Dr Peter Moore, Clinical Director, Endocrine/Diabetes Services, Canterbury District Health Board)

“Throughout the years Professor Beaven has consistently championed the needs of people with diabetes at all levels in society, through all available forms of media, and at all levels of government. His encouragement and support of ventures to empower people with the knowledge to improve their lifestyle has added greatly to the health of this country.” (Liz Trow, Honorary Life Member Diabetes Christchurch).
