Information:
WORLD DIABETES DAY WHAT IS IT? World Diabetes Day is the
primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world. Co-sponsored by the
International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health
Organization (WHO), World Diabetes Day was first introduced in 1991 in
response to concern over the escalating incidence of diabetes around the world. Since 1991, it has grown in popularity and now unites more than 350 million people worldwide including opinion leaders, health-care professionals,
carers, children, adults and, of course, people with diabetes
themselves.
In 1996, a permanent logo was designed. The logo is central to creating a strong global identity for World Diabetes Day. The logo, based on the well-known symbol of Yin and Yang, represents a combination of balance and teamwork. These two elements form the core of effective diabetes management: a careful balance of insulin, medication, diet and exercise is essential in order to remain fit and healthy, as is teamwork between health-care professionals, colleagues, friends and
family.
WHY NOVEMBER 14: November 14 was
designated World Diabetes Day as it is the birthday of Frederick Banting
who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which lead to the
discovery of insulin in October 1921. November 14 is both a time for
celebration and a time for reflection. It is an occasion for all to
celebrate the advances in the medical and social spheres and also to
reflect on the work that still needs to be done to further improve the
care infrastructure for people with diabetes.
