Diabetes Christchurch ~ The New Building

Page 1

Diabetes Christchurch has now moved into the new purpose built CDHB building that also houses the Diabetes Centre and the Kidney and Dialysis Training Centre.

Finally our dream for our diabetes society for many years to have a “one stop shop” for people with diabetes and by being part of and involved alongside our professional colleagues we can now collectively provide the information, help and support for people of all ages with diabetes. Diabetes is a burgeoning disease nationwide and the new centre brings under one roof many existing facilities housed in various CDHB or leased buildings throughout the city. Diabetes Christchurch provides support and education and has achieved some notable success in this area through the energies of Professor Don Beaven and many presidents, committees and volunteers. Community education, support for research, advocacy and lobbying for people with diabetes, are a cornerstone of our societyies' work. By being together we are now better able to provide the resources, education, advice, support and advocacy to help people and their families and whanau to better manage their own diabetes.

The society has 130 square metres on the ground floor of this four storey CDHB building. Overlooking Hagely Park our new premises includes a larger shop area, two administration offices, a lounge and kitchen area, plus a storeroom and a third office area where we will be starting a subsidised podiatry toe-nail clipping service in May, 2007. We also have access to the two large meeting rooms which run alongside our society rooms. But unfortunately it does come at a huge cost. After considerable fundraising efforts and some superb grants from the Canterbury Community Trust, Eureka Trust, Lion Foundation, The Charitable Trust Foundation, NZ Community Trust, Robert and Barbara Stewart Charitable Trust, we have now made our first initial payment of $150,000+gst to the CDHB for our 20-year lease arrangement. We now have to raise annually by October each year, $58,500 for the next five years. We are asking you as members or as friends or family of people you know have diabetes to donate to Diabetes Christchurch towards are "Building Project Fund".
